Great Ayton library workshop

Six enthusiasts came to my workshop today at Great Ayton library.  We read poems by Roger McGough, Helen Mort, Gillian Allnutt and Ian McMillan.  We talked about their format, style, subject matter and depth of meaning in some cases.  They were very brave and wrote a few lines based on something they had read and then read them out to the rest of the group.  What stars ⭐️.  I read some of my poems too.  What a great morning.

Smardale walk

Smardale is a lovely, quiet area which is not easy to get to but which has a nature reserve with red squirrels ? and a wide variety of birds.  We saw nuthatches, kestrel and heard a green woodpecker.

The initial path is a wide, well prepared track suitable for wheelchairs, however the viaduct is closed at the moment for repair work on the side barriers.  This means that the alternative path is narrow and through fields.

The well coppiced woodland is  full of hazel, oak, birch and other deciduous species. These are full of nuts and berries which attract birds and red squirrels.  A lovely place if you can brave the narrow roads and reverse well when tractors appear.

if you look closely you can just see a red squirrel in the last photo.
